Good configuration, as it is it's almost perfect, maybe more cores and that's it. I prefer Virtualbox over VMware (low budged & free) solutions, but that's personal opinion!

Why is "virtual" pfsense a problem? With good physical NIC(s) there are possible almost unlimited connections. Good thing with virtualization is that it consumes less power, less power means lower electricity bill (well, thats not an issue at one or two PCs) and lower UPS costs. Also migrating to different physical "server" is done very easy (just cp virtual disk images).

In cost/performance solution maybe AMD processor is better choice (for virtualization cores does matters!).

If you need any help on system administration I'm ready to help, also count on my further donations, monthly for beer or two!

Nice konf.
Did you think to use SSD instead of 1.5TB Hitachi SATA3 @ 7200rpm?
Think it will be more performance when transferring data. :)

Hi dudes,

Thank you for your replies. In this topic I try to answer you both!

eBa: for the current config I can not apply SSD, since the virtual PCs have the following sizes:
1. firewall 16GB (for logs)
2. web/email server: 80GB
3. urt1 80GB
4. urt2 250GB (for DLNA)
5. winXP 60GB
In this sizes I can not buy a cheap SSD :)

What i want to change for a better, lagfree gameplay:
1. Move firewall to a phisical hardware (for this I want SSD) B)
2. Move TS3 from the xp to linux and close virtual PC (XP).
3. Upgrade hardware main hardware to i5 (rest 3 virtual PCs: web/mail server, urt1, urt2)

Cthu:
About Virtualbox: I tried it, the earlier KRH server ran with it. But by my informations Esxi can deliver far more closer speed of the virtuals to the phisical (memory handling, etc):
Here you can find a topic, this contains the earlier config of krh server:

Esxi is the free version of Esx.
I've choosen this config because this is supported by Esxi and at my company I can resell my hardware as new if I want. For our clients the company does not sell AMD PCs :(
(I have AMD BE CPU at home).
So at the next time when i want to upgrade from S775 to other Socket, I probably have to have to choose Intel config...

And again: thank you for you donations and offer for help!
Are you experienced in Ubuntu?

I actually think that the suggestion that individual game server. Of course, a strong and fast for the system have to be invested in economic terms.
Besides, even if the server in this state (compared to other servers) does not lag very fast and high.

Are you experienced in Ubuntu?

Well I'm Ubuntu (desktop) user from the beginning of the ubuntu era (2005).

And I work in this kind of business, I also (among the others) manage system administration (ubuntu & debian servers).

So if u need any help, I'm glad to help!

Hi you both, :cheer:

eBa I applied one server only (and installed virtual machines) to save money (hardware and power consumption, etc).
Until the current hardware can handle this (BTW growing) load, I do not plan global changes.
Of course a nonvirtual urbanterror game-hoster would be more powerful, but even this one to have always on at home is currently enough for me :)

Uti I will maybe ask for some help from you (too bad for you you offered your help)
I have a lots of problems and weaknesses, but I collect them first.

Thanks again guys!

:beers:

Well it is quite long, but it contains all the things i have in my mind to fix. Of course I don't wait you to fix them, just collected together.
You could maybe help me in the Ubuntu related themes where you have far more experience than I. For example autostart the urt servers. If you are ready to help, I can write here the current method.

And here are my projects wait for me:

For linux topics send me details about the problems and i'll try to help. Also topics about domains (dns or aplication (apache etc.) managing).

Abount UrT server (&mods) I don't have experience. But if you have certain "linux" problem I can help.

Mysql auto backups & co is my daily job! ::cool::

What about the FTP access? Explain more!

Ohh you must be genius, you answered me while playing on FUNNY
:yekk:

As you can remember, I have more virtual servers behind my firewall. The main web&mail server works BTW as FTP and MySQL server.
On the the firewall are port 20 and 21 forwarded to this.

My problem is that I want to have FTP access to the other 2 Linuxes as well (the 2 urbanterror server). I use the default FTP program vsftpd and although set in vsftpd.conf
listen=YES
ftp_data_port 1020
listen_port 1021

I can't access it (not even locally).
I know i have to set the port forward rule in the fw, but with this it doesn't work inside my lan neither. :(

---
Ohh for sure the MODS was not meant to you, as I wrote just collected my problems together :)
---

Urt server Linux related question:
I run my every server with its unique user from its home folder. E.g. user urt1. Detalis:
linux executives here:
/home/urt1/start.sh (for manual start)
/home/urt1/startscreen.sh (for start in screen)
and for B3
/home/urt1/b3start.sh
/home/urt1/b3screen.sh
(The above are just examples).
So if I want to run the server, I have to login with the user urt1 and execute startscreen.sh and b3screen.sh
Then logout and login with the next user (urt2).
Or if I want to some maintenance, and shutdown the whole computer, the same procedure one by one and shutdown all processes.
Do you have any suggestion for a better way or scripting?

---
And at last I have a strategic question. I trust your opinion since you are MySQL expert. Currently B3 programs of the urt servers on both of my virtual linux servers work to the web&mail servers MySQL server. (since this is which I can access via the /phpmyadmin page). What do you think, would it be better if the urt servers would access the B3 databases on them own? Or shall I leave it as it is?
:smart:

I hope my English is not so confusing and you could get the meaning

Nope, I just come an try new mouse in the real game! :)

Just for start, you probly know that but .... virtual (guest) machines have right IPs? You should have IPs in the local subnet range, common VM has 10.XXX.XXX.XXX range, an local subnet has 192.168.whatever. For using VM with NAT rouls you should give it right IPs and gateways addresses. Also check how your virtual NICs are in "bridged mode" or something similar not via (VM) NAT.

For linux you don't need FTP, beter option is SFTP (SSH file transfer) which all linux distributions support by default (SSH server should be anabled). So if you can connect to black console (via putty or so) then you can also transfer files with proper client (winscp, filezilla, totalcmd).

For starting services with "user" privileges you can use command like this:
/bin/su -c "/location/to/command -parameters" user

... if you are not root (admin privileges) user then you must enter password for account, if you are root no passw is required.

For automatic startup upon system restart you can run this command with rc.local.

So add this up line to file:
/etc/rc.local

About mysql. For administration (& backups) is better to have only one mysql server. BUT if mysql server is not on the same physical HW there are possible big latency on queries. I don't know how much this services use mysql, but I'm 90% that this configuration it's ok.

That's it, i hope that you will solve some of the problems!

What do you mean? Too weak or too strong for the role?
Urbanterror needs not a strong hardware and bandwidth as a server...

Yes, maybe it is, test I/O with an tool on diffrent loadings.
There are a lot of data that was archieved and if there to many I/O it cause lags. The second ist that the read write head of the HDD must move very much for these OPs - costs amount of time. And if the cache of the HDD is full there are additional lags.

i7 platform has better price/performance than professional server solutions. I use in my job i7 processors for much bigger systems and they work fine!
